Call Encryption
VoIP calls are much more vulnerable to interception than those on dedicated telephone (PSTN) lines. Just about anyone, with some basic freeware tools, can eavesdrop and record your calls from halfway around the world. If those calls involve confidential client information, corporate trade secrets, financial results, or health patient records, the consequences can be severe. Experts agree that VoIP conversations should be encrypted to prevent unauthorized call monitoring, but most SIP are relaying unencrypted clear-text signals. Why? Most customers are not aware of their exposure, and most service providers are unsure how to cost effectively encrypt and decrypt this "last mile" portion of the call.
UM Labs SIP Security Controllers deliver an extremely cost effective 256 bit encryption solution for companies concerned about voice privacy, and their service providers. The controller can automatically transmit and receive encrypted signalling and media streams between a company's PBX and a session border controller at its service provider. It can also operate as a gateway, relaying clear-text signalling or media to a PBX unable to support encryption. The controller delivers encryption for both voice and video calls made from remote devices, including suitable SIP hardware phones, soft-phones and mobile devices such as cell-phones and PDAs. SIP signalling is encrypted using TLS as specified in the SIP standard. The Security Controller supports a range of encryption algorithms including 256 bit AES. Media is encrypted using SRTP. The SIP Security Controller offers a choice of key exchange algorithms, including ZRTP designed by Phil Zimmerman.
